On the evening of July 2, 1949, the finalization of the IMPBA was presented to the then model boat representatives. Some of the organizers were: Barney Kiewicz, Ed Kalfus, F. Schneider, and a Mr. Sparr. The first draft of the IMPBA Constitution, By-Laws, and Racing Rules were presented. These original documents are now the property of IMPBA, and the boaters were strictly "tether" boaters. Tether racing was against-the-clock racing. There was a center pole in the pond and a 52'6" aircraft cable. Four laps on this circular course was a 1/4 mile, and the boats were timed for four laps and the top speed in each class was the winner.
Each year IMPBA holds an International Regatta where model boaters from throughout the membership gather together in competition events. National Championship trophies (US-1) are awarded for each class of Hydro, Mono, and Outboard based on 1/16 mile straight trophy trials, 1/3-mile oval trophy trials, and multi-boat heat racing. The host club may elect to offer special events for other classes as well.

Presidents Corner
We have the new web site in place. The best part is that we will be able to keep the members more informed. A feature of the new web site is the ability to poll the members to get their comments before anything gets done. Before you can vote on a poll, or ballot, you must register. You will also be able to contact your directors, renew or join the IMPBA, and do your club registration thru the web site.
I have asked the Board that we don’t accept any proposals until after the 2010 Internats meeting. We need to get our rule book up to date and on the web site, and we’re also getting ready to rewrite the rule book text with an up to date computer program.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

In 1959, the Westcoast Council of Model Boaters was formed. This group of boaters raced under the basic rules of the International Model Power Boat Association, and obtained insurance through the Western Associated Modelers (WAM), headed up by Don and Myrtle Coad. During 1969-1970, a group of these West Coast boaters saw the need for a new, national R/C boat association. Working in conjunction with WAM, Bill Young of Bakersfield set up a committee consisting of Ira McKay and Jim Riccio of Arcadia, Sally Stewart Komich, Russ Kominitsky, Wally Stewart, and Bill Young of Bakersfield, and Griff Parker of San Diego. They met on many occasions in Pasadena, decided on the name of North American Model Boat Association (NAMBA), and proceeded to come up with a basic set of rules, copies of which were sent to everyone who had indicated a desire for the national organization.
From the replies received came the first official set of rules. NAMBA was enthusiastically adopted under the auspices of WAM by Executive Secretary, Myrtle "Mom" Coad. To give the West Coast group a national feeling, Gary Johnson, formerly of California but currently living in Honolulu, HI and racing with the popular "Hawaiian Horde," was appointed as the first President by the original committee.
